THE ABSENT GOODBYE
JULIA MARTIN is an interdisciplinary artist with a B.F.A in Photography Studies from Ryerson University in Toronto. Her work has been exhibited through group shows at the Ryerson Gallery, Hangman Gallery, Gallery 1313, and the Gladstone Hotel.

In 2009 she received the Consulat Général de France & Alliance Française Festivals in France Award and exhibited the series This Is Not Your Life (2006-2009) in a solo show at the Galerié Pierre-Léon in 2010. Martin’s book-works are currently carried by Art Metropole.

In 2011 she was named as one of the winners of Flash Forward, The Magenta Foundation's exchange of emerging photographers.

There is a sense of urgency to her portraiture which suggests a fear of loss, as well as a desire to understand others in the photographic freeze-frame. This vulnerable naiveté plays out in large contact images of her conversations with subjects, while also showcasing Martin’s fascination with pattern and coded imagery.

Working within complex narrative structures in her book works, Martin tells dark, autobiographical stories. With sly satire and deft denouements, she encourages you to laugh at the punch line, no matter how harrowing the setup.
